For the first time ever, there are 5 carriers operating nonstop between NYC and Tel Aviv, and we are finally seeing affordable airfares on the route for the first time since the 10/7 massacre.
The 2 new entrants, Arkia and Israir are already making a big difference in the market, with fares sales on El Al, United, and Delta.
Arkia uses a wet-lease model, where they use European airlines like Hi-Fly to operate flights that they sell between JFK and Tel Aviv. Israir bought 2 of American’s mothballed A330-200s and is operating its own flights between JFK and Tel Aviv using those aircraft.
They are both low-cost carriers, and if you thought it was difficult to reach El Al or use El Al’s website, just wait until you try Arkia or Israir! However, competition is a good thing as both carriers are including a free checked bag, a free large and small carry-on, and kosher or even mehadrin kosher meals in the airfare. Both airlines even offer a lie-flat business class cabin, something rarely seen with low-cost carriers, and readers report scoring upgrades at the airport or onboard for as little as a few hundred dollars!
Best of all, they are both selling one-way airfares, something that is rarely seen on international routes.
Can the market handle all of the extra capacity? One DDF member wrote an Israir trip report and shared that there were just 30 passengers on his flight! Israir flights to the US won’t be around for long if they can’t get those load factors up by an order of magnitude.
But Israir says that Miami-Tel Aviv flights are coming soon, so they clearly want to get in on the market. They will have to work on IT, customer service, and a loyalty program in order to succeed in a highly competitive marketplace.
